Honolulu City Council bans smoking in cars carrying kids
A bill making it illegal on Oahu to smoke in automobiles when children are present was approved 8-0 on final reading by the Honolulu City Council this morning.
Mayor Kirk Caldwell has already said he will sign the bill, barring any legal glitches.
Supporters reason that those under 18 often have no choice when it comes to riding in a vehicle driven by adult. Critics say the proposal is a further intrusion into people’s private lives.
Bill 70, introduced by Council members Brandon Elefante and Ron Menor, would apply not just to tobacco cigarettes, but to electronic smoking devices as well.
