Haiku woman dies in car crash on Maui

A 77-year-old Haiku woman has died in a single-vehicle crash on Maui.

She has been identified as Maryvonne P. Kosatschkow.

Just before 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, police said a red 2001 Volkswagen Passat operated by Kosatschkow was traveling northbound on Kauhikoa Road when it veered into the southbound lane at a bend in the roadway and into the shoulder.

The vehicle then went up a dirt embankment and slammed into a tree. Kosatschkow was transported in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Police said she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

An investigation is ongoing.

This is Maui county’s 12th traffic-related fatality compared to 13 at the same time last year.
