Four people died and several others were injured in a four-vehicle crash Saturday night in Kaanapali, Maui police said.
Police said excessive speed was a factor in the crash that happened around 6:50 p.m. on Honoapiilani Highway just south of Kekaa Drive.
Police said the driver of a 2003 Dodge pickup truck was heading south when he crossed over a center painted median and slammed head-on into an oncoming 2007 Toyota Camry sedan traveling on the inside lane of the highway.
The sedan then struck a 2014 Dodge pickup truck in the outer northbound lane and was hit from the rear by a 2015 Toyota Sienna van also heading north.
The driver of the pickup that crossed the median and three people from the Camry died at the scene. Two other people in the Camry were injured, one critically.
Police said the driver of the pickup had been using a seat belt and identified him as Raymundo Hernandez-
Ramirez, 52, of Lahaina.
Two of the victims from the Camry were identified by police as Charles Whipple, 36, of San Mateo, Calif., and Danille McColloch, 36, of Galt, Calif.
Police said Whipple and McColloch were both unrestrained passengers in the rear seat of the car, and McColloch was ejected in the crash.
The driver of the Camry was wearing a seat belt and died in the crash. His name was being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.
A 36-year-old San Mateo, Calif., woman, who was restrained in the front passenger seat of the Camry, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
A 38-year-old Galt, Calif., man, who was restrained in the back seat of the Camry, was taken to Maui Memorial in critical condition.
Police said a 37-year-old Kahului man who was driving the 2014 pickup was uninjured.
The driver of the van, a 55-year-old Napili man, was also not hurt. One rear seat passenger in the van, a 44-year-old Studio City, Calif., woman, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial.
One of McColloch’s family members and a friend of Whipple’s were reached by phone Sunday, but they declined comment.
Police were investigating whether drugs and alcohol were involved in the crash.
State court records show a man with the same name as the pickup driver, Raymundo Hernandez-Ramirez, was convicted of driving under the influence of an intoxicant in 2006 and 2009. Hernandez-Ramirez was also convicted of driving without a license in 2009 and speeding in 2012.
