Despite an overwhelming shots advantage, the Hawaii soccer team fell in its Big West opener, 1-0 at UC Davis on Thursday.
The Rainbow Wahine (5-5 overall) outshot the Aggies (2-9, 1-0) by a count of 19-7, but a 36th-minute header by Mckenna Moriarty was all that mattered. UCD goalkeeper Alexis Smith recorded 11 saves.
“Every once in a while a keeper is going to have a very big-time performance, and that’s what we saw from Davis’ keeper today,” UH coach Michele Nagamine said in a postgame phone interview. “She was the reason that they won, for sure. She kept us off the boards. There was no question in my mind that we were the better team; she just had a very exceptional performance.”
The Wahine had their three-game road winning streak snapped.
Raisa Strom-Okimoto and Lei Medeiros led UH with four shots each, while Sonest Furtado had three shots on frame.
UH continues play at preseason Big West favorite Long Beach State at 3 p.m. Sunday.
