Kailua triangle work to begin Monday

The city expects to begin construction on the triangle intersection of South Kalaheo Avenue and Kailua Road on Monday to address long-standing concerns regarding congestion on the way in and out of Kailua Beach Park and Lanikai.

The project will transform the intersection fronting Kalapawai Market into a roundabout. It is expected to be completed by summer 2018.

Motorists should anticipate delays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays due to a combination of contraflows and detours at the intersection while work is ongoing.

Honolulu City Councilman Ikaika Anderson said he expects the new roundabout to ease traffic congestion, particularly for first responders trying to access the surrounding communities, and asked for patience during the construction phase.

“I do expect that this will make a big difference,” said Anderson at a press conference, “in helping to ease the traffic flow and traffic congestion in and out of the surrounding communities of Kailua Beach Park during three-day holidays and times when this particular beach park gets a lot of usage.”

The Lanikai Association, Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle and Kailua Urban Design Task Force support the project as a way to reduce congestion as well as emergency access in and out of the Lanikai area.
