Police reopen highway near Velzyland

A section of Kamehameha Highway on Oahu’s North Shore was reopened this afternoon after a crash near Velzyland closed the road for most of the morning.

The single-vehicle crash occurred just after 3:45 a.m. Police said two occupants fled the scene soon after a truck struck a utility pole.

Lanes in both directions of the highway near Velzyland were closed due to downed wires blocking the roadway, but state transportation officials announced around 12:30 p.m. that the highway will be contra-flowed.

A crew from Spectrum is at the scene, said spokesman Dennis Johnson. “They are working and doing what we can to get the highway reopened as quickly as possible,” he said.

Authorities said the road was reopened shortly before 2 p.m.
