A 39-year-old Waianae man has been charged with assaulting an emergency room employee at Pali Momi Medical Center.
Henry Akuna was charged with third-degree assault last week and was being held at Oahu Community Correctional Center in lieu of $500 bail.
A police affidavit said officers arrived at Pali Momi at about 3:20 p.m. Sept. 18 to find Akuna strapped down to a gurney in the emergency room.
Hospital staff reported that Akuna had admitted himself to the hospital, complaining of chest pain and shortness of breath. Akuna then told a nurse that he had been “smoking methamphetamine all day,” the affidavit said.
After a nurse administered a set of shots to calm him down, Akuna began pacing around the room and yelling and swearing at the staff, the affidavit said. Security arrived, and Akuna allegedly punched an emergency room technician in the face.
Hospital staff restrained Akuna, sedated him and called police.
