Bystanders rescue visitor from ocean
Bystanders rescued a woman from California from the ocean off Makena Friday.
At 12:30 p.m. Friday, rescue crews in South Maui responded to a report of an unresponsive female pulled from the water at Makena Landing, the Maui Fire Department said by email.
The victim, 57, a visitor from Fremont, Calif., had been snorkeling and was found by a family member floating face down. The family member brought the woman to shore, where a nurse and a firefighter on vacation administered immediate CPR.
The woman responded within a minute and started breathing on her own,
Wailea firefighters arrived at 12:41 p.m. to find her already breathing. Paramedics treated the woman before transporting her in stable condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, the department said.
