Shark warning signs remain posted at Waimea Bay this morning as a precautionary measure following a sighting on Tuesday afternoon.

On Tuesday, lifeguards re-posted shark warning signs at the beach park after a six-foot shark was seen feeding about 100 yards offshore. There were no new sightings this morning, according to City Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman Shayne Enright, but the signs are staying up as a precautionary measure.

In mid-September, signs were posted for about a week due to the sighting of multiple sharks.

A shark expert said the recent spate of shark sightings is likely due to the spawning season of juvenile akule (halalu), which have been observed at Waimea Bay and other coastal areas in recent weeks.
