The University of Hawaii at Manoa moved up 10 spots in the 2018 U.S. News &World Report Best Colleges rankings, landing in the middle of the pack of national universities.
UH Manoa ranked 159th among the 311 Best National Universities and placed 83rd among the 132 Top Public Schools on the U.S. News list released Tuesday. National universities offer undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees and are committed to research.
U.S. News surveyed 1,600 colleges and universities, grouping them in categories, such as “national universities” and “liberal arts colleges,” to compare schools and programs with similar missions. It used a range of data to gauge excellence, including academic reputation, graduation rates, class size, test scores, selectivity, faculty and financial resources.
Both public and private Hawaii institutions are included in the rankings. In the Regional Universities West category, Chaminade University placed 40th, Hawaii Pacific
University 59th and UH Hilo 66th. A total of
141 schools were ranked in that category, which includes schools with undergraduate and master’s programs.
In the Regional Colleges West group, Brigham Young University Hawaii ranked No. 18, while University of Hawaii at West Oahu placed 25th out of 65 schools in the category for schools focused on undergraduate programs.
Administrators at UH Manoa welcomed the improvement in its U.S. News ranking, which came a week after the university placed 63rd in the nation on a separate listing, the 2018 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, which was Manoa’s best showing so far.
“We continue to be gratified by the upward movement in recent academic and research rankings, both on national and international levels,” said Michael Bruno, UH-Manoa interim vice chancellor for academic affairs and vice chancellor for research. “They show that our faculty and staff are working hard, and working together, to give students the best and most accessible higher education experience.”
UH Manoa’s Shidler College of Business ranked 109th out of 526 business schools nationwide in the U.S. News report, improving its position by five spots over last year.
“We are extremely pleased to be recognized among the top business schools,” Dean Vance Roley said in a statement. “We are investing in our students to equip them with the necessary skills and international experience to succeed in today’s global business environment.”
The top-ranked National University on the U.S. News list is Princeton University. Among Top Public Schools, the University of California at Berkeley tied for first place with the University of California at Los Angeles.
