The Japanese government and the suprapartisan Sports Federation of Diet Members will consider establishing legislation to address possible issues concerning the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

According to informed sources, the envisaged legislation will cover five issues, including the resale of Olympic tickets and the duration of games officials’ stays in Japan.

The Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games officially asked the federation to discuss the new legislation last month.

The five issues to be considered:

1. Regulating the resale of Olympic tickets at higher prices and the mediation of ticket resales

2. Regulating unfair product sales and other business practices related to the games conducted by non-Olympic sponsor companies

3. Extending the period of stay for games officials who enter Japan on short-term visas to 180 days from 90 days without requiring extra procedures

4. Making activities conducted by games officials who do not live in Japan exempt from income, corporate and other taxes

5. Eliminating application fees for radio station licenses to be used for the games, as well as other related costs

The government and the lawmakers federation will first examine whether it is possible to address these issues under the current system before considering measures such as the revision of relevant laws and regulations, the creation of new laws or the revision of the special measures law on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, the sources said.
