Three-time world champion Carissa Moore placed second out of three surfers in her heat, but still advanced to the second round of the Swatch Pro at Trestles in San Clemente, Calif., on Wednesday.
Moore was one of four Hawaii women to make it to the second round of the World Surf League event, along with Malia Manuel, Coco Ho and Tatiana Weston-Webb. Moore and Manuel go head-to-head when competition resumes today, conditions permitting.
At No. 8, Weston-Webb is Hawaii’s highest-ranked WSL women’s surfer. Moore is No. 9, Ho is No. 11 and Manuel is No. 13.
Hawaii Pacific edged by Concordia
The Hawaii Pacific women’s soccer team was edged by Concordia (Portland, Ore.) 2-1 at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cavaliers (2-1) netted the first two goals of the game, as Sydney Van Steenberge and Quinn Williams both scored. Sara Romo cut the lead in half for Hawaii Pacific in the 70th minute, but the Sharks (2-1) were unable to tie things up.
Hawaii Hilo swept by Menlo
The Hawaii Hilo volleyball team was swept on the road Wednesday night, falling to Menlo College 25-21, 25-21, 25-17 in Atherton, Calif.
The Vulcans dropped to 1-1, and Menlo — an NAIA team — improved to 9-3. Maggie McDonald and Emily Sunada had 11 kills each for the Oaks.
