High bacteria levels foul Big Isle beaches
The state Department of Health issued several beach advisories for Hawaii island earlier this week due to elevated bacteria levels at Kahaluu Beach Park, Kailua Pier and Keaukaha Beach.
The public is advised to stay out of waters in those three areas due to levels of enterococci that are greater than the threshold level of 130 per 100 milliliters during routine beach monitoring by the department’s clean water branch.
Children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are most susceptible to developing illnesses or infections after coming into contact with polluted water.
The advisories remain in effect until removed by the department at emdweb.doh.hawaii.gov/cwb/wqd/viewer.
