Rockfall work to close Diamond Head trail

Starting Sept. 18, the popular summit trail at Diamond Head State Monument will be closed weekday afternoons, beginning at noon, so the state can remove rockfall hazards along its slopes until early December.

All hikers must be off the summit trail by 2 p.m. on weekdays, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

The summit trail, however, will remain open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and state holidays. The parking lot, restroom, visitor center and gift shop inside the crater floor will also remain open during most of the work.

This is the third and final phase of the $1.72 million project, which began in late spring and is expected to be completed by early December.

DLNR said some full-day closures will be required later in the fall and will be posted. Updates are available at dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp.

Accident closes Highway 19

Police shut down a section of Highway 19 for most of the day Monday after a tanker truck landed in Kaawalii Gulch.

Just after 10:30 a.m., firefighters responded to the single-vehicle crash on the highway between the 28- and 29-mile markers in Laupahoehoe. The Hawaii County Fire Department said the truck struck a guardrail, flipped over and landed midway into the gulch.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries and was able to exit the vehicle on his own. The Fire Department said paramedics took him to Hilo Medical Center to be treated.

To aid in the recovery of the truck, the Fire Department said a biodiesel truck arrived to offload 6,000 gallons of used cooking oil from the tanker.

Kusch said the container carrying the cooking oil remained intact in the crash.

By late afternoon police shut down a section of the highway while crews used a crane to recover the truck from the gulch. The highway was reopened sometime before 9:50 p.m.

Police seek dirt bike thieves

Maui police say four or five people stole several dirt bikes from a warehouse in Kahului on Friday, breaking into the building between 3:40 and 4:34 a.m.

Surveillance cameras at the property showed the suspects opening a chain-link fence at the site and a large, dark-colored pickup truck hauling a container entering the property. Cameras then showed the truck leaving the property with the container filled with large boxes.

Anyone with information on the burglary is asked to contact Detective Matthew Bigoss of the Maui Police Department at 244-6313 or matthew.bigoss@mpd.net.
