The north side of the Kailua Beach Park parking lot will be closed today for maintenance, according to a news release from the city Department of Parks and Recreation.
The north lot was also closed Wednesday as city crews cleaned and restriped it. City crews finished cleaning two parking lots on the south side of Kaelepulu Stream last week near the canoe hale and boat ramp but were unable to get to the north side right away because of landscaping and the accumulation of sand.
The parking lot and beach park are regularly closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Repairs on 3 Manoa roads to start Monday
Road repairs are scheduled to begin on Manoa Road, East Manoa Road and Nipo Street on Monday, according to a news release from the city Department of Facility Maintenance.
The project, which includes repaving and filling potholes, is scheduled to continue until the end of September.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes while crews work from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Drivers who must travel through the work areas should expect modified traffic patterns and delays.
Kauai
Crime-mapping program available on police website
The Kauai Police Department has relaunched the community crime-mapping program on its website.
The relaunch took place after LexisNexis acquired RAIDS Online and the Police Department underwent a brief transition with its records management system.
The program provides similar features under RAIDS Online, including alerts and “tip411” allowing the public to provide anonymous tips on recent crimes.
“This map helps the public to better understand crime trends that occur in their area and make informed decisions to stay safe,” Kauai Police Chief Darryl Perry said in a news release.
Under the crime-mapping webpage, which is updated every 24 hours, a user can view the times, locations and types of offenses that occurred throughout the island. The crimes the Police Department tracks range from weapons violations, vandalism and motor vehicle thefts to more serious offenses like aggravated assaults, robberies and attempted homicides.
Lt. Roderick Green of the Police Department’s Administrative & Technical Bureau of the Research & Development Section said while Kauai is relatively safe, crime still occurs “like everywhere else in some capacity.”
The tip411 feature of the program can be found under “Metadata” and allows the public to report information anonymously. For example, a resident who suspects illegal drug activity in an area is encouraged to utilize the tip line, which operates similar to CrimeStoppers. “We encourage the community to be the eyes and ears of the Police Department,” Green said.
He stressed that tip411 does not replace 911 and that the public should still call dispatchers for emergencies or a crime in progress.
The program also offers crime alerts, notifying users via email.
