The Hawaii soccer team closed its first week of the 2017 season with a second overtime victory, this time a 2-1 decision over Fairfield on Sunday night.
Raisa Strom-Okimoto had the instant winner in the 100th minute, a straightaway shot from 25 yards after teammate Leialoha Medeiros attempted a bicycle kick and the ball deflected into open space.
UH (2-0), which beat Utah Valley by the same score in OT on Friday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium, claimed the Ohana Outrigger Resorts Shootout title with the tense wins.
“I think they’re trying to kill me. It’s a conspiracy,” UH coach Michele Nagamine said in a postgame phone interview. “Two nights, overtime. This was not our best performance, and the kids know that.
“I’m proud they could claw their way to another overtime win. But it was one of the uglier matches I’ve seen in a long, long time.”
After Fairfield (1-1) scored in the 54th minute, senior Sonest Furtado answered with a header score in the 77th off an assist from Mikaelah Johnson-Griggs.
The Wahine lost freshman defender Cristina Drossos late in the game with a knee injury. Nagamine said Drossos would get an MRI today but added, “I don’t think we’re going to have her for a while, to be honest.”
