It wasn’t part of the original game plan, but Roosevelt used its balanced offensive attack to top McKinley 33-0 at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium for a season-opening victory.
The Rough Riders attempted only seven passes, but two of them were for touchdowns that contributed to the rout.
“We said coming in that we weren’t going to throw the ball, but our offensive coordinator saw some things with their defense,” Roosevelt coach Kui Kahooilihala said. “Basically, we just want to run the ball and take the clock down.”

* Summaries from Friday’s games
Roosevelt’s only completion of the first half came with 8:49 in the second quarter, when Shastyn Kekahuna hit Samuel Baang 40 yards in stride for the first score of the game. Kekahuna finished 5-for-6 with 110 yards and two touchdown passes. The Rough Riders doubled their lead when Tamaki Iijima took a quarterback sneak down the middle for a 1-yard touchdown.
The Rough Riders put the game away when Jared Elwin reversed field after receiving an option pitch, slipping his way into the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown with 11:09 left in the fourth quarter. He was also the game’s leading rusher, taking 13 carries for 100 yards.
“They’re a good team and in the beginning it was close,” Kahooilihala said. “It was just taking care of some little things for us on offense, taking care of the ball and control the tempo.
Siolei Lopes-Liutolo had 85 yards of total offense to lead the Tigers, who are still seeking their first win since 2013.
