Honolulu Fire Department investigators found that the fire that destroyed a Waimanalo nursery warehouse Friday afternoon caused an estimated $150,000 in damage.
Firefighters extinguished the fire at 3:49 p.m. at Sharon’s Plants.
When they arrived at 41-614 Waikupanaha St., they discovered a 2,000-square-foot, two-story warehouse fully involved in flames, said fire Capt. David Jenkins.
The first alarm was at 1:53 p.m., and the first unit was on scene at 2 p.m. The blaze was quickly brought under control by 2:13 p.m., and the second alarm was canceled.
Fire officials were informed that several gallons of chemicals, including pesticides and fertilizer, were inside the warehouse.
A hazardous materials unit was called in to check air and water quality, and to contain the runoff, which could contain chemicals.
Hazmat personnel determined that all stored chemicals were contained to the immediate area of the building, the Fire Department said.
The state Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response office was notified.
No one was in the building at the time, and there were no injuries but the structure was a total loss.
The cause remains under investigation.
