Hawaii’s Tatiana Weston-Webb and Coco Ho won their quarterfinals on Thursday and will face off in today’s first semifinal of the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Ho edged Australia’s Tyler Wright 12.86-12.50, taking advantage of Wright breaking her board with 10 minutes left in the heat. Ho scored a 5.03 during the waning moments to eliminate the current world No. 1.
Weston-Webb withstood a challenge from France’s Johanne Defay, who scored a 7.17 late in the heat. Weston-Webb, the event’s defending champion, answered with a 6.80 to eliminate Defay and set up the all-Hawaii showdown.
On the men’s side, Hawaii’s Keanu Asing and Sebastian Zietz were eliminated in the third round after finishing fourth in their heats.
Hawaii’s Joshua Moniz will compete in the third round today, weather permitting.
Billy Kemper and Kiron Jabour were eliminated in the second round Thursday.
In Thursday’s pro junior quarterfinals, Hawaii’s Cody Young won his heat to advance to today’s semifinal, while Elijah Fox was eliminated after finishing second in his heat.
Mililani KC wins World Series opener
Mililani KC beat Troy, N.Y., 6-2 on the opening day of the Cal Ripken 12/70 World Series on Thursday in Branson, Mo.
Mililani’s Zarin Poopaa hit two solo homers and Evan Elarionoff pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and also homered.
Mililani will face Iowa (0-1) today.
Hawaii Hilo men’s basketball adds transfer
The Hawaii Hilo men’s basketball team added Trey Ingram, a transfer from Saint Martin’s, to its recruiting class for the upcoming season, coach GE Coleman announced Thursday.
Ingram, of Scottsdale, Ariz., is a 6-foot-1 guard who averaged double figures in points in all three of his seasons with the Saints.
The Vulcans have seven players in this year’s recruiting class.
