A 45-year-old man has been charged in the shooting of his older sister in Hawaii Kai.
Jonathan Tien appeared in Honolulu District Court on Monday after he was charged Saturday with two counts of second-degree assault, first-degree terroristic threatening and carrying or use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony.
His preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday. Tien remains in custody in lieu of $500,000 aggregate bail.
At about 5:55 p.m. Friday, police said, the suspect later identified as Tien and the victim, 49, were involved in an argument. The dispute escalated and Tien assaulted his sister, police said.
Police said he also assaulted a 14-year-old girl when she tried to intervene.
According to a court document, Tien then used a semi-automatic firearm to assault his sister, causing “substantial bodily injury.”
Emergency Medical Services transported the woman in serious condition to a hospital after she sustained a gunshot wound to her leg.
Shortly after, police arrived and arrested Tien at Kalele Kai, a condominium complex at Keahole Place, on suspicion of attempted murder.
