About 500 gallons of sewage spilled Monday into the Mokapu drainage channel on Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
The state Clean Water Branch advised the public to stay out of the water until further notice.
The spill happened between 10 and 11 a.m. near the intersection of Bingham Way and Pancoast Place, about a mile inland of Kaneohe Bay, the branch said by email.
The discharge was stopped and the area cleaned up and disinfected, the branch said. Warning signs were posted.

County sponsoring bike ride starting at Lihue Civic Center
Kauai County is sponsoring a community bike ride today in Lihue.
The inaugural Rice Roll begins at 4:45 p.m. at the Lihue Civic Center rotunda.
The ride is an opportunity for bicyclists of all ages “to ride their bikes together in a safe and fun-filled atmosphere,” said Alden Alayvilla, a spokesman for Mayor Bernard Carvalho.
Alayvilla said by telephone Monday that the route will be 6 miles, ending at the Kauai Beer Co. on Rice Street, but that riders will have the option of turning back at 2 miles.
Co-sponsors include Hawaii Pacific Health, Wilcox Health, Get Fit Kaua‘i, Kaua‘i Path and the Lihue Business Association.
“Events such as the Rice Roll bike ride allow us the opportunity to inspire healthier, active lifestyles within the Kauai community,” said Jen Chahanovich, president and CEO of Wilcox Medical Center, in a statement.
Kaua‘i Path has been coordinating easy-paced bicycle rides in the communities for years.
“We are thrilled to build momentum around the Rice Street revitalization, and partner with this group of organizations and the County of Kauai in promoting prudent bicycling centered on the Lihue town core,” said Tommy Noyes, executive director of Kaua‘i Path, in a statement. “Folks of all ages are welcome, nobody gets left behind, and we always hear very positive feedback from participants.”
For those needing a bicycle, Kaua‘i Path can often accommodate requests for loaner equipment submitted through the KauaiPath.org website.

Missing work furlough inmate arrested after nearly 3 weeks
A work furlough violator from Hawaii Community Correctional Center was recaptured Saturday in Hilo.
Acting on a tip, officers went to an apartment at 33 Hualalai St. and arrested Spencer Feary, 30, who was taking a shower.
Feary was arrested on a warrant for furlough violation and returned to HCCC.
Feary left Hale Nani, the center’s reintegration program in Panaewa, on July 10 and failed to return, according to the state Department of Public Safety. He was serving time for robbery and had a parole hearing set for October.
