Haleiwa native and reigning World Surf League champion John John Florence was ousted in the quarterfinals of the Corona Open J-Bay in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, today.
Florence was pitted against Federico Morais of France. Morais’s two-round total of 19.77, including a perfect 10 on his second wave, topped Florence’s score of 18.67.
Hawaii teams victorious at regionals
All four teams from Hawaii that competed in a Cal Ripken Pacific Southwest regional tournament were victorious on Wednesday.
Hawaii’s KRU topped Kingsburg, Calif., 9-3 in Visalia, Calif. Starter Noah Bernal allowed three hits and one run while striking out five in 32⁄3 innings to earn the win. KRU continues pool play today against Taylorsville, Utah.
In the 11u division, Hawaiian Fire defeated Simi Valley, Calif., 9-2 in Long Beach, Calif. Kolby Gushiken tossed three hitless innings to help the team improve to 3-0 in the regional. Hawaiian Fire will take on Windsor, Calif., today to conclude pool play.
The Honolulu Saints of the 12u-60-foot regional defeated Heartwell, Calif., 8-1 in Long Beach. Chandler Murray and Sean Yamaguchi both homered, while Murray drove in a game-high four runs. With the win, the Saints clinched the top seed in pool B and will play the fourth seed from pool A this morning.
In the 12u-70 division, Mililani KC defeated Windsor 7-1 in Beaver, Utah, to improve to 3-0 in pool play. Zarin Poopa allowed one run and struck out four in 52⁄3 innings and helped his own cause with a home run and two RBIs. Mililani KC completes pool play this morning against Visalia, Calif.
