Body of fisherman found off North Shore identified

A 54-year-old fisherman found unresponsive on the North Shore Tuesday evening has been identified as Nathan A. Caraulia of Wahiawa.

An autopsy is expected to be performed to determine the exact cause of death, according to the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office.

Caraulia failed to return to shore after he was last seen leaving Haleiwa Beach Park heading toward Kaena Point at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Honolulu Fire Spokesman Capt. David Jenkins said an unmanned kayak equipped with fishing gear was found adrift off of Aweoweo Beach Park in Waialua.

Firefighters responded and initiated a shoreline search. They found Caraulia unconscious and without a pulse near the shore at Kaiaka Bay at about 8:10 p.m.

Emergency Medical Services responded and pronounced him dead at 8:56 p.m.
