Maui firefighters extinguished a two-acre brush fire threatened homes in Paia.

The fire occurred in a fallow sugar cane field east of Ulumau Place shortly before 4:30 p.m. Sunday, threatening about a half-dozen homes.

Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto of the Maui Fire Department said some residents on both Ulumau Place and Maoli Place were evacuated from their homes for a short period.

Firefighters including the department’s Air 1 helicopter responded and conducted water drops, stopping the fire about 10 feet from a home on Ulumau Place, Taomoto said.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control at 5:18 p.m. and extinguished it just after 7:05 p.m.

No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Area residents reported observing children running from the sugar cane field just before the brush fire broke out.
