Fire at Kalihi elementary school found to be intentionally set
Police are investigating a fire that occurred at Kaiulani Elementary School that was determined to be intentionally set.
Firefighters responded to reports of smoke at the school, located at 783 North King Street, Thursday at 5:54 p.m., according to Honolulu Fire Department Captain David Jenkins. Firefighters arrived at the scene to find smoke coming from the school cafeteria. A total of 18 fire department personnel brought the fire under control by 6:07 p.m. and extinguished it by 6:23 p.m.
A section of the roof and several ventilation windows were damaged. Jenkins said the cafeteria was closed at the time of the fire.
Fire investigators determined the fire was intentionally set. A damage estimate is pending.
