The U.S. men’s national volleyball team, with two starters from Hawaii, remained alive for the FIVB World League title on Wednesday after defeating defending event champion Serbia 3-1 in Curitiba, Brazil.
Setter Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) had two blocks and an ace in the 25-22, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22 win that guaranteed the U.S. a spot in Friday’s semifinal. Libero Erik Shoji (Punahou) added 12 digs.
“The best thing about our team is our composure, our togetherness,” said U.S. team captain Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani), who was used as a serving specialist in Sets 1 and 3. “There was no panic (after the loss to France on Tuesday). We knew our destiny was in our hands.”
Former University of Hawaii All-American Taylor Averill did not play.
HHSAA to host statisticians workshop
The Hawaii High School Athletic Association is offering a free football statisticians workshop on July 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Kaimuki High School. It will be led by sports information expert Thomas Yoshida, who has nearly 40 years of experience.
