Hawaii pitcher Dominic DeMiero worked against San Francisco during the first inning on Feb. 24 at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu. The ’Bows relinquished 114 walks in in 457 innings, an average of 2.25 walks per nine innings. There are 295 teams that compete in NCAA Division I baseball.

The University of Hawaii baseball team led the nation in fewest walks allowed this recently completed season, according to NCAA statisticians.

The ’Bows relinquished 114 walks in in 457 innings, an average of 2.25 walks per nine innings. There are 295 teams that compete in NCAA Division I baseball.

Clemson was second with a 2.26 average. Florida, which won the national title, was 30th at 3.06. The rankings include statistics through the College World Series.

UH coach Mike Trapasso was pleased with the accuracy because “we basically replaced 70 percent of the innings pitched” from the previous season. The ’Bows entered 2017 with three new starting pitchers and a reconstructed bullpen.

“Kudos to the guys and all the work they put into it,” Trapasso said.

In the absence of power pitchers — none of the starters’ pitches regularly exceeded 91 mph — the ’Bows relied on “pitching to contact and pounding the (strike) zone,” Trapasso said.

The ’Bows also finished 22nd in earned-run average at 3.58.
