The Department of Public Safety announced Friday the appointment of Al Cummings to head the state Sheriff Division.
The appointment was effective immediately.
“Al will bring valuable experience in his new role as sheriff,” said DPS Director Nolan Espinda in a release issued Friday. “He has risen up through the ranks and has a wealth of law enforcement and security experience going back 37 years. He will provide effective leadership, accountability, and will ensure that the division operates efficiently.”
Cummings spent the last two years as first deputy for the Sheriff Division, overseeing statewide operations, staffing and administrative functions, according to the release.
Cummings previously served as a section commander at various courthouses on Oahu from 2005 to 2015. He began his career as a state security officer.

Pop group America returning to Hawaii
Grammy Award-winning group America returns to the Blaisdell Concert Hall on Aug. 5, with a show the following night at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
Of America’s albums, six have been certified gold and/or platinum. The band’s hit singles during the 1970s included “A Horse With No Name,” “Ventura Highway,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People” and “Sister Golden Hair,” all cornerstones of the era’s FM rock radio.
