CHINO VALLEY, Ariz. >> A 10-year-old Chino Valley boy has died after being found beaten, burned and not breathing in the home of his mother and her boyfriend, who have been arrested in the case, police said today.

Police Lt. Vincent Schaan said Christian Pearson died Sunday from the injuries he suffered before being found Thursday after his mother called 911 to report he wasn’t breathing.

The boy had been hospitalized in critical condition.

With the boy’s death, police will ask prosecutors to charge 34-year-old Julianna Moreno and 36-year-old Daniel Terry with first-degree murder, Schaan said in a statement.

A police officer at a hospital where Terry was taken for treatment of an unspecified condition overheard Terry say the boy’s death involved “discipline gone wrong,” Schaan said during an interview. “We don’t know what that means. He wasn’t very forthcoming during the interview process.”

The boy had visible burns when he was found on the living room floor, but he apparently suffered his injuries in his bedroom, Schaan said.

Though the injuries apparently were inflicted the same day he was found, he also had bruises indicating prior abuse, Schaan said.

Moreno and Terry remained jailed Monday after being arrested Thursday on suspicion of attempted murder, child abuse and aggravated assault. It’s not clear whether they have attorneys who could comment on the allegations.

Terry was not the 10-year-old boy’s father, but Terry and Moreno had a young daughter who also was in the home, Schaan said.

The girl, about 18 months old, was turned over to the state Department of Child Services, Schaan said.

Department spokesman Darren DaRonco said Monday that the girl has been placed in a licensed foster home. The agency had no previous contact with Moreno and Terry involving the children, he said.
