A 41-year-old man has been charged in a home burglary in Kaneohe.

Frank J. Moreno, also known as Frank Jesse James Moreno, appeared Friday in District Court after he was charged Thursday with first-degree burglary and unauthorized entry into a dwelling.

Per Diem Judge Paula Devens confirmed his bail at $100,000 and set his preliminary hearing for Wednesday.

At about 9 p.m. Tuesday, police said, Moreno and two other suspects banged on the front screen door of a studio home on Waikalualoko Loop with one of the men yelling, “HPD, open up,” according to a court document.

When one of two women who reside in the home opened the door, the suspects allegedly forced their way in while brandishing a loaded firearm.

Police said the suspect who was holding the firearm punched one of the women in the face twice with his empty hand.

Dorsey Roberts, a retired Marine Corps sergeant major, was in his home office in the rear of the property when he heard the women screaming. He said the 62-year-old woman who was punched also was body-slammed by one of the suspects.

Roberts confronted three males clad in hooded shirts and bandannas. He said the suspects also had a large knife and bat.

The suspects fled, and Roberts called out for help to an off-duty police officer who lives nearby. The officer responded and chased one of the suspects, later identified as Moreno. At some point the officer allegedly struck Moreno, and Roberts said he pulled Moreno backward by his dreadlocks and body-slammed him to the ground before the officer handcuffed him.

Police arrested Moreno on suspicion of first-degree robbery and impersonating a law enforcement officer.

The 62-year-old woman who was assaulted sustained a split lip and jaw and suffers back pain from the attack. The two other suspects remain at large.

Moreno has an extensive criminal record that includes felony convictions for methamphetamine trafficking and terroristic threatening. His record also includes misdemeanor and petty misdemeanor convictions of abuse of a family or household member, unlawful imprisonment, assault and driving under the influence of an intoxicating liquor.
