When surf’s up Down Under
COURTESY RICK KAHN
Nellie Lee of Waikiki, pictured, and Rick Kahn of Honolulu were all smiles when they spotted this sign posted on a private hut on Stewart Island in New Zealand. Known as Rakiura in the Maori language, Stewart Island is about 19 miles south of New Zealand’s South Island. The sparsely populated island is 650 square miles in size, making it slightly larger than Oahu but with a population of fewer than 500 people. Lee and Kahn took a 20-day hiking trip through New Zealand in February.
