Hawaii County police said the driver of a four-door sedan died this morning after a three-vehicle crash in Paauilo.
Police are withholding his name pending notification of his family.
Police got the call at 9:04 a.m. that a sedan was heading toward Hilo on Highway 19 when it crossed the center line near the 37-mile marker and hit head-on a 2007 Kenworth dump truck towing a flatbed trailer. The sedan was pushed into the path of a Hilo-bound 2016 Jeep Wrangler.
The sedan driver was ejected and pinned under the bed of the trailer, and was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he died, police and the Fire Department said. The dump truck driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries, and the two Jeep occupants were uninjured and refused treatment.
Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Officer Clarence Acob at 961-2293. Anonymous calls may be made to CrimeStoppers at 961-8300.
