Summer readers can now log minutes online
A new online literacy service is making it easier than ever to participate in the Hawaii State Public Library System’s free Summer Reading Program.
The mobile-friendly Beanstack allows participants to set reading goals, log reading minutes and earn incentives anywhere, anytime — even while on a vacation trip — on their smartphones, tablets and home computers. It also issues regular emails with customized book recommendations based on user preferences. Virtual badges are earned at the 100-, 300- and 600-minute levels that can be redeemed in person at public libraries for rewards that include books, school supplies, building blocks, tote bags and coupons for free DVD borrowing, while supplies last.
But paper works just fine, too, and log sheets for the Summer Reading Program, which starts today and runs through July 15, are available at all 50 public libraries in Hawaii.
This year’s theme is “Build a Better World.” There are reward levels in four age groups: toddlers (through pre-K), children (grades K-5), teens (grades 6-12) and adults.
In addition to rewards, participants can qualify for two prize drawings — at the halfway point and at the end of the Summer Reading Program — with winners at each library branch receiving such prizes as a Pizza Hut pizza party and backpacks filled with school supplies.
