COLUMBUS, Ohio >> As enrollment in online charter schools explodes, states are struggling to keep up and to put in place regulations ensuring students get a real education and cyber schools get the right amount of funding.
The future of virtual schools is part of the larger school-choice debate, seeing renewed attention since the installation of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. She is an online charter investor and advocate who sees them as a valuable option for students.
While some perform well, the sector has been plagued by accounts of low standards, mismanagement, and inflated participation counts at schools that are reimbursed based on the number of enrolled students.
Jay Z’s streaming service loses third CEO
NEW YORK >> Jay Z’s Tidal streaming service has lost its third CEO in two years. Tidal said Friday that Jeffrey Toig has left the company, which was launched in 2015 and is co-owned by Beyonce, Madonna, Rihanna, Kanye West and others. The streaming service said in a statement that it will announce a new CEO “in the coming weeks.”

Hirano has 30 years of experience in human resources management, including serving as a senior vice president of client services for Randstad Sourceright, a global human resources service and consulting provider.
>> The Honolulu Community Action Program Inc. announced Jennifer Tanele as its new Head Start assistant director. Tanele first served as a Head Start teacher at HCAP in 1998 and later became a Head Start teacher mentor. In 2015 she became a Head Start Education Program manager.
>> Christine Sakuda has been appointed Transform Hawaii Government’s first executive director. Sakuda previously worked at Hawaii Health Information Exchange, where she first served as a board member, then an interim executive director and eventually became executive director in 2009.
