Out of surgery after having her right kidney removed, U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono was already weighing in on the latest political developments, according to a Twitter message from her staff Wednesday.
“Got out of surgery and doing okay! Thank you all for the well wishes!” her staff quoted the Hawaii Democrat as saying.
Hirono announced Tuesday that she had been diagnosed with kidney cancer that spread to one of her ribs. The cancer is classified as Stage 4.
In addition to having her kidney removed, Hirono is scheduled to have the lesion on her rib removed in June through a non-invasive, outpatient procedure that involves intensive radiation.
Hirono, 69, said in a news release Tuesday that following the procedures no identifiable disease will be left untreated. The senator also reaffirmed her commitment to run for re-election in 2018.
Hirono was apparently feeling well enough after her operation Wednesday to join her Hawaii colleagues in Congress in weighing in on the most recent news regarding President Donald Trump. (Hirono has said that she plans to continue working during her recovery.)
From the hospital, she dictated the following statement, according to staff:
“The appointment of a special counsel is a victory for the American people who have demanded the truth about Russia’s goal to undermine our democracy and the Trump team’s ties to these efforts. As someone who has been calling for a special counsel for months now, I applaud the selection of former FBI Director Robert Mueller who has a reputation for independence and a dogged pursuit of the truth. I hope that Director Mueller’s investigation will be truly independent and free to follow the facts wherever they lead. The American people deserve no less.”
