North Shore native John John Florence was upset by Brazil’s Yago Dora in the third round of the Oi Rio Pro in Rio de Janeiro. Florence, the reigning World Surf League champion, scored a 10.16 in the heat while Dora had a 15.50.

On the women’s side, Oahu native Coco Ho was eliminated by Johanne Defay of France, 14.96 to 13.50.

Rosenmeier, Cowell finish fourth

University of Hawaii men’s volleyball players Brett Rosenmeier and Colton Cowell finished fourth at the USA Volleyball Beach Championships on Saturday at Hermosa Beach, Calif.

The pair, seeded 10th out of 11 duos, lost to second-seeded Jackson Bantle-Hagen Smith of UCLA, 21-17, 21-17, in a morning semifinal at the Hermosa Beach Pier courts. Rosenmeier-Cowell then lost to third-seeded Nathan Vander Meer (Davenport) and Logan Webber (Cincinnati) in the third-place match, 21-14, 12-21, 15-11.

Rosenmeier, a sophomore hitter who helped Hawaii to an NCAA tournament semifinal appearance last week, and sophomore Cowell, a King Kekaulike product, finished the event 4-2, having gone 3-0 in pool play and winning their quarterfinal match on Friday.

Bangle-Smith will meet top-seeded Lucas Yoder (USC) and Michael Saeta (UC Irvine) for the championship today.

Ioane, Neilson to speak at QB Club

Hawaii track and field senior Charlinda Ioane and her mother, Davilyn Neilson, will be the speakers at Monday’s meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Ioane, a Kapolei alum, won bronze in the discus throw at the Big West Outdoor Championships and finished seventh in the shot put.

Neilson was a four-sport star in high school in softball, basketball, bowling and track & field. She went on to attend BYU-Hawaii on an academic scholarship.

The event will take place at the Maple Garden Restaurant. Lunch, which costs $16 per person, will be served at 11:30. The program begins at noon.
