TV show uses K-dramas to teach common phrases

Fueled by K-drama and K-pop, kamaaina are exploring other aspects of Korean culture — traveling to Korea, eating Korean food and learning the Korean language.

Now TV viewers can learn Korean from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Sundays on KBFD. “Pit-A-Pat Korean” teaches Korean using famous drama scenes. The show teaches commonly used phrases.

King Sejong created Hangul, the Korean alphabet, using 14 consonants and six vowels. Hangul gave the commoners the ability to read and write, which had been reserved for the noble class.

There are seven regional dialects of the Korean language with the Seoul dialect as the national standard. “Pit-A-Pat Korean” teaches the Seoul dialect.

“Perfect Bride”
Episodes 53 and 54

>> Today, 6:30 p.m.: Se-gye goes to see Jae-soon and is heartbroken at their living condition. Nae-shim gets upset when she sees Joong-nyun excited to meet a female elementary school classmate.

>> Today, 7:45 p.m.: Gab-dol visits his father’s grave and says it’s time to let his mother move on. Shi-nae and Do-geum concoct a plan to separate Soo-jo and Ji-ha.

“Whisper”
Episodes 8 and 9

>> Monday, 7:45 p.m.: Soo-yun takes the witness stand. Jung-il is confident there is nothing to connect him to Soo-yun and Sang-goo. But he’s put on edge when he finds out that Dong-joon knows he’s got a big loan through Sang-goo. Soo-yun senses Jung-il is trying to make her the scapegoat and the trust between them starts to falter.

>> Tuesday, 7:45 p.m.: Detectives arrive to arrest Young-joo. Knowing Il-hwan’s behind the raid, Dong-joon threatens to expose the sentencing if he doesn’t fall back. Soo-yun and Jung-il engage in mental warfare to win over Sang-goo, who’ll be a key witness. Young-joo approaches Sang-goo with a proposition.

“Saimdang, Memoir of Colors”
Episodes 27 and 28 (series finale)

>> Wednesday, 7:45 p.m.: Saimdang and Ji-yoon transcend space and time, and meet. Ji-yoon tells Saimdang a way to save Yi Gyum. Saimdang succeeds in saving Yi Gyum on his way to his exile. To the family’s joy, Ji-yoon’s husband, thought to be dead, comes back alive.

>> Thursday, 7:45 p.m.: Saimdang’s son passes the national exam and returns home with great fanfare. Saimdang and Yi Won-soo exchange gratitude and apologies and make amends. In the present day, Sun Gallery’s director comes clean, announcing the “Keumkangsando” painting as fake.

“Band of Sisters”
Episodes 5 and 6

>> Friday, 7:45 p.m.: Ha-ri heads for Jae-il’s house without him. She finds her belongings discarded outside. Jae-il’s parents blame Ha-ri for his death, spewing some harsh words. Ha-ri’s sister comes to the rescue. Se-kyung sees Dal-hee’s old photos.

>> Saturday, 7:45 p.m.: Ki-chan kneels and begs for forgiveness from Jae-il’s parents. Sang-mi gets furious and throws water at him. Seeing this, Jae-dong comes to the rescue and helps Ki-chan. Eun-hyang sees her husband and Se-kyung together and overhears their conversation. She is shocked at realizing they are having an affair.
