KEAAU >> Waianae’s Douglas Mitchell only goes through the motions to prepare for the high jump.

With no high jump pit on campus to practice on, Mitchell works on his footwork, practicing the run-up to jump into a nonexistent pit. The practices and time spent watching YouTube videos paid off when Mitchell won the high jump title on Friday at the Island Movers/HHSAA State Track and Field Championships at Keaau High School.

“I just do bounding like plyometrics and playing basketball, I already got my hops from that,” Mitchell said after clearing 6 feet, 2 inches.

Mitchell said he was thankful for everything from competitors giving him tips to enduring a long Thursday. He went from the campus to the airport on Thursday afternoon and arrived late in the evening before grabbing dinner and checking into the team hotel.

“It feels great,” Mitchell said. “All the competitors were great. They give pointers sometimes.”

Kaiser’s Juliette Lum cleared 11 feet to win a drama-packed girls pole vault event. Lum was one of three vaulters who missed at 11-6 and the place finishers were based on their attempts at 11. Lum cleared 11 on her first attempt whereas the other two needed more than one, giving her the title.

“I just told myself to run and jump and give it all I got,” Lum said of her attempt at 11-6. “I was close on my second attempt.”

Teammate Tommi Hintnaus, the top entrant in the event, initially wasn’t allowed to have a third attempt at 11. The official claimed her name was called to start her attempt but Hintnaus and Lum didn’t hear it. In tears, Hintnaus pleaded her case with the official as Lum tried to console her.

“I told her to breathe so if they give you another chance, you can just kill it and get it,” Lum said. “We had the 4×100 right after so we needed her to let it out of her system. We didn’t want her to get scared about it and do bad in the 4×100. I tried to be there for her.”

Hintnaus was later allowed that final attempt after she ran in the 4×100 trials. She missed and finished fourth.

“I was jumping OK and then I was trying to jump to not miss instead of jumping to make,” Hintnaus said. “And when I had only one minute left and I didn’t know I had one minute left, he told me you’re done, you’re disqualified. I didn’t even get to do my last jump. I thought was unfair but I didn’t hear him. That was my fault.”

Aiea’s Leslie Mamai-Lagafuaina rallied to win the girls shot put title with a mark of 43 feet, 3 inches. She moved into first place on her second-to-last throwing attempt. The moment she heard her mother scream, she knew it was a good mark.

“I had been hitting 38, 38,” Mamai-Lagafuaina said. “I wasn’t being consistent at 40 and above. When I hit it, I heard my mom scream and I (thought) ‘OK, I did it.’ ”

Kamehameha’s Kayla Afoa repeated as girls long jump champion. Afoa finished with a winning mark of 17-101⁄4 inches. Waipahu’s Isaiah Harris won the boys triple jump with a mark of 45-31⁄2. Punahou’s Alama Uluave won the boys discus title during intermittent showers.

“It was rainy and that affected everyone,” Uluave said after throwing 154-5. “(160 feet), that’s definitely the goal.”

Mililani’s three seniors who are missing today’s commencement ceremony got a ceremony after the meet. Principal Fred Murphy flew to Keaau and handed out diploma covers to Kaleo Pogue, Jaratt Kaopuiki-Ota and Hamilton Howard, who were dressed in their caps and gowns. Family and teammates gave them lei and sang the alma mater over the stadium microphone.

“Everyone here knows we had to make at tough decision, going to graduation or going to states,” said Pogue. “Having a graduation here is a really big honor and I’m glad that we got all of the support from fans and other schools.”

Kaiser’s Kristen O’Handley was the top finisher in trials for the girls 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes. Damien’s Christian Padron was the top finisher in trials for the boys 100 and 200.
