Carleton College sophomore Ayumi Sakamoto, who was named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the week on May 2, shot a 1-under 71 and is tied for second place heading into today’s second round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championships at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston.
Sakamoto, a 2015 ‘Iolani graduate who ranks third in the conference with a 78.1 scoring average, was 2 over at the turn before making three birdies in her final eight holes to finish as one of three golfers under par in the 116-player field.
She trails the leader by two shots.
George Fox junior Iris Kawada is five shots back in a tie for sixth place after shooting a 2-over 74. Kawada made two birdies and four bogeys during her round.
The 2015 Castle graduate was the top finisher for the No. 1-ranked Bruins.
Teammate Sydney Maluenda, a 2013 Kapolei alumna, is tied for 25th place after shooting a 6-over 78.
Maluenda made her lone birdie at the par-3 eighth to go along with five bogeys and a double bogey at the par-3 12th.
New York University junior Alyssa Poentis, a 2014 Punahou alumna, is tied for 37th place after shooting an opening-round 80.
Dung repeats as player of the week
Fresno State sophomore Kamalani Dung repeated as Mountain West Conference pitcher of the week.
The announcement came Monday after Dung, a 2015 Kamehameha graduate, went 3-0 with an 0.36 ERA over the weekend to help the Bulldogs improve to 32-20 overall and 12-8 in conference.
Dung beat New Mexico three times in the sweep at Margie Wright Diamond. A 5-0 victory in the first game on Friday was Dung’s eighth shutout of the season, which leads the conference.
She pitched all 19 innings and struck out 19 batters while allowing only one earned run on 11 hits with three walks.
Dung has thrown every inning for the Bulldogs over the past six games, going 6-0 with a 1.33 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 42 innings.
Her 23 wins rank 14th in the nation and she leads the conference with 184 strikeouts, which is 29th nationally.
She also leads the MWC with 2181⁄3 innings pitched this season.
Frost is top freshman, all-conference in GNAC
Johnson & Wales outfielder Kristin Frost was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference rookie of the year on Monday, as well as first-team All-GNAC.
Frost, a 2016 Pearl City graduate, started primarily in the outfield this season but also made seven appearances as a pitcher.
She finished in the top 10 in the conference with a .394 batting average and led all rookies with 41 RBIs.
Frost, who also hit 11 doubles, two three triples and four homers and stole 15 bases, picked up one save and had a 4.20 ERA in 112⁄3 innings.
Punahou alumna Kiessling earns first-team honor
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps junior attacker Roxy Kiessling was named to the All-Southern California Interscholastic Athletic Conference girls water polo first team on May 3.
Kiessling, a 2014 Punahou graduate, led the Athenas with 54 goals and was first in the conference with 18 goals in league matches.
She also had a team-leading 33 assists for CMS, which finished 5-6 in conference and 11-20 overall. The Athenas finished fifth in the conference tournament after Kiessling had two goals and two assists in a 13-11 win over La Verne in the season finale.
Redlands (Calif.) sophomore center Kolby Kahahawai, a 2015 Kamehameha alumna, was named to the All-SCIAC second team.
Kahahawai led the Bulldogs with 50 goals, including 16 in conference, and added eight in the SCIAC tournament.
