The Kipapa Stream Bridge, also known as the Roosevelt Bridge, on Kamehameha Highway was scheduled to close in both directions between Ka Uka Boulevard and Lanikuhana Avenue this weekend, from 9 p.m. Friday through 8 a.m. Monday.
The closure allows crews to do bridge deck work, according to the state Department of Transportation.
Additional closures are tentatively scheduled for the weekends starting Aug. 11, Sept. 8, Nov. 3 and Dec. 1 and 15, according to DOT.
DOT officials advise motorists to use the H-2 freeway as an alternate route. The weekend closures allow the overall project to be completed faster and to reduce impacts during traditional commute times, DOT said in a statement.
Animal shelter owners deny guilt
The owners of a no-kill animal rescue shelter in Makaha pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty in Waianae District Court on Friday and will stand trial on the charges in July.
Friends for Life owners David “Lanny” Moore and his mother, June Moore, are each facing 310 counts of animal cruelty. In addition to pleading not guilty, both waived their opportunity to request trial by jury. That means a judge will determine their fates.
The Moores also face the possibility of having to repay the Hawaiian Humane Society the nearly $700,000 that the organization spent to care for the 306 dogs and six rabbits that were seized from Friends for Life in October. The Moores agreed to forfeit the surviving animals, except for three rabbits, and their offspring last month. The Humane Society says more than 200 of the animals have been adopted.
