Christian Rae Wong’s vinaigrette made with ume and strawberry guava has won her $1,500 and a summer internship at King’s Hawaiian’s Los Angeles headquarters.
Wong, a Kapiolani Community College culinary student, was among six student finalists who presented their dressings to a panel of judges April 21.
Wong’s dressing will be considered for sale on the company’s website.
Second place ($700) went to Cindy Nakabayashi for a Zesty Lilikoi Dressing, and third place to Jolynn Len, who received a $500 cash prize for her Poha Cape Gooseberry Dressing.
Luau supports robotics team
A luau at Dole Plantation on May 11 will benefit the Waialua High School robotics team.
The benefit luau is in its 10th year, with proceeds going toward student travel to competitions. Over the years the event has raised $90,000 for the team.
The event runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and includes a silent auction, a performance by Brother Noland and a demonstration of robotic technology by the Waialua team.
The team was Hawaii’s first robotics-related program and was given the FIRST Robotics Competition “Hall of Fame” Chairman’s Award in 2011.
Tickets are $40, available through May 10 at Dole Plantation, from robotics team members or through director Glenn Lee at 637-8292.
The plantation is at 64-1550 Kamehameha Highway, outside Wahiawa.
Teachers: Free coffee from Jack
Jack in the Box Hawaii is honoring teachers with a free cup of coffee on Teacher Appreciation Day, Tuesday.
Teachers are invited to collect a regular-sized hot or iced Hawaiian Paradise coffee — just show a pay stub or a school ID.
The promotion runs all day at all Jack in the Box locations in the state.
Finalists aim to master Mule
Many forms of the Moscow Mule will be showcased in a live cocktail competition, 5 p.m. Monday at SKY Waikiki.
The vodka maker Ketel One is challenging finalists to customize the traditional drink, with judges selecting the night’s Master of the Mule. The title comes with a cash award of $1,000. Runners-up (dubbed Teacher and Apprentice of the Mule) also win cash prizes.
The 20 or so cocktails mixed will be available as samples to spectators.
