Firefighters extinguished a fire at a Makaiki apartment this morning.

An apartment building fire in Makiki briefly shut down Wilder Avenue traffic during rush hour this morning.

The fire occurred at about 7 a.m. inside a ground-floor unit of the three-story building at 1330 Wilder Ave.

Nine Honolulu Fire Department companies with 35 firefighters responded to the blaze. Upon arrival, they observed smoke emerging from the unit and flames inside the kitchen, said Honolulu Fire Battalion Chief John Bowers.

Firefighters brought the fire under control at 7:15 a.m. and extinguished it two minutes later. No injuries were reported.

Bowers said a resident who lives in the apartment was not home at the time of the fire.

Police shut Wilder Avenue between Keeaumoku and Kewalo streets as firefighters battled the fire. The roadway reopened at about 7:50 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and a damage estimate has yet to be determined.
