Windy and wet weather is expected to continue through Monday as a Kona low passes close to the island chain. Forecasters also predict that snow could fall on Hawaii island summits.
Temperatures are expected in the mid-60s to high 70s today, reaching the low 80s on Monday.
Heavy rainfall prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood watch for Oahu, Hawaii island, Maui, Molokai and Lanai through at least this afternoon. Forecasters said that while Maui is expected to get the most downpours, Hawaii island and Oahu will experience more rainfall over the next day or two.
In Kahului, rainfall Saturday set a record for the date. The weather service said 1.51 inches fell, breaking the old record of 0.43 inch set in 1989.
Weather officials also extended a high surf advisory for the south shores of all islands through this morning. Surf is expected to reach 5 to 8 feet along south shores.
On Hawaii island, officials said 6 inches of snow and winds of 55 to 75 mph are possible on the upper slopes and summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Forecasters issued a winter storm warning through Sunday night and a high wind warning through Monday morning.
Off the mountains, the island was downright balmy. In Hilo, the high temperature of 89 degrees set a record for the date, breaking the previous mark of 86 degrees set in 2010.
