Waimanalo’s Tyson Nam scored a head-kick knockout of Ali Bagautinov with one second remaining in the third round of a bantamweight fight in the main event of Fight Nights Global 64 in Moscow on Friday.
Nam, 33, a veteran of Icon Sport and EliteXC, improved to 15-8-1 and has gone four consecutive fights without a loss.
Bagautinov (14-6) was ahead in the fight and a second away from winning when Nam caught him with a right kick to the side of the face that knocked him out.
Bagautinov was released from the UFC following a 4-3 run with the company, which included a decision loss to UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson. This was his first fight outside of the UFC since 2013.
Herrera named Jack Nicklaus semifinalist
BYU-Hawaii’s Nicolas Herrera was named one of the 30 semifinalists for the Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award on Friday.
Herrera helped the Seasiders to the program’s first ever PacWest men’s golf championship earlier this week. Herrera also helped lead BYUH to five first-place finishes this season, including the final four tournaments of the season.
Finalists for the award will be announced on May 18. The winners will be named on June 1.
BYUH softball edges Chaminade
The Brigham Young-Hawaii softball team topped Chaminade in a rain-shortened game, winning 1-0 in six innings.
Taiana Williamson picked up the win for the Seasiders (12-25, 7-16 PacWest), tossing a one-hitter.
The game was called in the bottom of the seventh inning. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed and will be made up at a later date.
