Kauai police Monday identified a hiker who died after she was swept away in a stream over the weekend as Fiona Choi, 26, of Lihue.
Choi was hiking with a group on the Kaapoko Tunnels Trail in Wailua on Saturday when she slipped and fell while crossing a stream, Kauai firefighters said.
She managed to grab onto a rock downstream, but was no longer there by the time the group reached the spot.
After an unsuccessful search of the area, the group left the trail and called for help at about 5:35 p.m.
Responding firefighters searched the area via helicopter but suspended the search at 7:35 p.m. due to darkness.
The search resumed at 6 a.m. Sunday, and Choi’s body was found in the stream about an hour later.
