Prosecutors say the driver in a fatal hit-and-run crash in Nanakuli last year was drunk, was speeding, and might have been racing with another driver.
Myisha Lee Armitage, 23, is charged with negligent homicide and fleeing the scene of a fatal traffic accident. She pleaded not guilty to the charges at her arraignment in state court Thursday.
Circuit Judge Colette Garibaldi scheduled trial for June. Armitage remains free on $11,000 bail.
Prosecutors say Kaulana Werner, 19, died April 26 last year when Armitage’s vehicle struck him.
Witnesses told police that Armitage’s and another vehicle were speeding east on Farrington Highway before they saw a backpack and other items fly up in the air. Other witnesses said they saw Armitage’s vehicle swerve off the road into Werner.
They said Armitage’s and the other vehicle did not stop after the impact but that Armitage’s vehicle stalled about a mile up the road.
The state said police arrived soon after and later reported that Armitage appeared intoxicated. She agreed to multiple field sobriety tests and failed. Armitage also agreed to submit to a breath test and to have blood drawn, which showed that her blood alcohol concentration was 0.13. The legal threshold for drunk driving is 0.08.
