Chloe Barr and Irene Gonzalez scored two goals each and the eighth-ranked University of Hawaii water polo team held off No. 12 UC Davis 7-6 in Saturday’s Big West match in Davis, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine (13-10, 3-1) took a 4-2 lead into halftime and the host Aggies (14-15, 2-2) rallied to tie the match with two goals early in the third quarter. Taylor Molde gave UH the lead again in the final minute of the period and Femke Aan and Barr extended the margin to three with goals early in the fourth quarter.
UC Davis’ Paige Virgil scored with 2:11 left and again with 28 seconds remaining, but UH ran out the clock to close out the win. UH goalie Ymane Hage finished with 11 saves.
UH closes the regular season on Saturday against Cal State Northridge at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
McInnis, DeMello at Quarterback Club
Brian McInnis of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Rob DeMello of KHON will be the guest speakers at this week’s Honolulu Quarterback Club.
McInnis was named the 2016 Hawaii Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association. He is the beat reporter for University of Hawaii men’s basketball and women’s soccer.
DeMello is the sports director at KHON, and was named the Hawaii Sportscaster of the Year for the second straight year.
Vulcans walk off against Fresno Pacific
The Hawaii-Hilo baseball team stormed back to beat Fresno Pacific 9-8 in 10 innings on Saturday at Wong Stadium.
Fresno Pacific (11-15, 8-9 PacWest) jumped ahead to a 6-0 lead after two innings, chasing UHH starter Eric Vega. But the Vulcans (6-15, 6-13) chipped away with four runs in the third inning, then added runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings before scoring three in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. Cole Nagamine singled in the winning run in the tenth inning to complete the comeback.
HPU baseball falls at Azusa
The Hawaii Pacific baseball team dropped its eighth straight game with a 10-0 loss on Saturday to No. 9 Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif.
The Sharks (14-24, 4-22 PacWest) have lost all 16 games they’ve played on the mainland. The Cougars (30-4, 17-3) won for the 15th time in 16 games.
Leading 4-0 in the sixth, Azusa Pacific blew the game wide open when Pablo O’Connor blasted a grand slam off HPU reliever Tyler Hazlett. O’Connor finished 2-for-2 with two runs and seven RBIs for the Cougars.
Seasiders dominate at Hawaii Challenge
The BYU-Hawaii men’s golf team easily won the 2017 Hawaii Challenge on Saturday at the Turtle Bay Resort Fazio Course, finishing 19-under 557.
All five golfers for the 12th ranked Seasiders finished in the top 10, led by Nicolas Herrera, who won the individual tournament shooting 12 under par. Teammate Jacob Godfrey was five shots back in second place after being tied with Herrera for the lead on Friday. Federico Clausen finished in eighth at even par for the tournament, Dalton Stanger was ninth at 2 over, and Alex Stulce was tied for 10th at 3 over.
The tournament consisted of the four PacWest teams in Hawaii. Hawaii-Hilo was in second at even par, while Hawaii Pacific was 3 over and Chaminade was 28 over.
