Suspicious fire scorches Maui brush, sugar cane fields
A suspicious brush fire burned 30 acres of fallow sugarcane in Pulehu, Maui, Wednesday night.
The cause of the blaze is undetermined, but is considered suspicious because fire crews saw small fires in two separate locations before it grew into one large fire front, the Maui Fire Department said in a news release.
The fire, which began 8:53 p.m., was fully contained by 7 a.m. Thursday. Eighteen firefighters and a battalion chief worked to put out the blaze.
The fire was located on the south side of Pulehu Road, 2 miles east of the Hawaiian Cement batching plant off Mokulele Highway.
No structures were threatened and no one was injured, the Maui Fire Department said in a news release.
