Punahou graduate Mariel Galdiano shot a final-round 67, but it wasn’t enough to win the Anuenue Spring Break Classic at Kapalua Bay on Tuesday.
Galdiano had the low round of the day to rise into fourth place at 3-under par, nine shots away from UCLA teammate Lilia Vu, who won medalist honors. The Bruins won the team competition by 17 strokes over second-place Arizona State. Hawaii finished in 11th place in the 15-team tournament.
Four other golfers with Hawaii ties finished in the top 15, with Brittany Fan (Colorado) in 14th at 5-over par, Ciera Min (Gonzaga) in 16th at 6-over par and Isabella Leung (Hawaii) and Kristin Le (Santa Clara) tying for 24th at 8-over par.
There were 11 HSJGA grads in the 90-player tournament.
Sawada gets partial exemption
Moanalua graduate Jared Sawada tied for 12th at last week’s PGA Tour Canada Qualifying Tournament in San Jacinto, Calif.
Sawada opened with rounds of 67-70-72. A final-round 73 Friday dropped him six spots in the standings, but still gave him a partial exemption for the season, which begins in June.
Sawada played for the University of Hawaii, won the 2013 Manoa Cup and finished 69th in this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii.
The Canadian Mackenzie Tour has five qualifying tournaments, with the top 40 at each earning some type of exempt status. Seabury Hall alum Alex Chiarella was 43rd at the first qualifier earlier this month in Santee, Calif.
The next two qualifiers are in Florida, with the final one in Canada.
Hawaii’s David Fink and Tadd Fujikawa cashed checks on the tour last year.
Shimomura, Rego win at HCC
Kevin Shimomura and Todd Rego opened with a 12-under-par 60 and finished with a two-shot victory at last week’s Aloha Section PGA Assistants Four-Ball Invitational at Honolulu Country Club.
The winning team had 10 birdies, an eagle and a bogey in the first round. They took a two-stroke advantage over John Hearn and Hunter Larson into the final round, when both teams shot 66.
