‘Moon Walks’ return to Waimea Valley
For seven months beginning April 8, Waimea Valley will offer its popular nocturnal “Moon Walks” beneath the light of a full moon. Visitors can enjoy the valley’s botanical gardens, which contain more than 5,000 varieties of plants, including native species, and walk to the waterfall.
Native Hawaiians measured time by mahina, the moon, which was central to their lives, said Ah Lan Diamond, the park’s cultural program manager, in an email. Their moon calendar, kaulana mahina, showed when to plant certain crops and to fish by the phases of the moon, she said.
While the walks won’t be guided tours, park staff will accompany visitors for safety and protocol reasons.
The walks will be at 8 to 10 p.m. April 8, May 6, June 8, July 6, Aug. 5, Sept. 4 and Oct. 1. Admission is $10.
Starting at 6 p.m., the Proud Peacock restaurant will offer a buffet dinner with Waialua beet salad, steak, chicken, Okinawan sweet potato, miso eggplant, turmeric rice and lilikoi cheesecake; dinner costs $29.95 for adults and $12.95 for children and includes moon walk.
For reservations, call 638-7766 or visit waimeavalley.net. Waimea Valley is located at 59-864 Kamehameha Highway.
